Gastrointestinal problems
Disorders of the gastrointestinal system are widespread. In Western Societies these problems are a common reason for needing medical treatment. They can account for up to 20 per cent of all visits to family doctors.
Refined diets, food additives, stressful lifestyles, excessive alcohol intake and smoking are common factors contributing to many gastrointestinal problems seen in the West, while in developing areas of the world infections and parasitic infestations can be found to be at the root of many gastrointestinal disorders.
Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease
Inflammation of the inner surface (mucosa) of the GI tract is a common diagnosis of GI problems. Many people suffer from recurrent inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). Both conditions cause frequent diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever and weight loss and recent findings suggest that these may in the long-term increase the risk of developing cancer of the colon and/or rectum.
Bleeding Oesophageal Varices (BOV)
Bleeding Oesophageal Varices (BOV) can be a life-threatening complication of chronic liver disease. Under certain circumstances these varices rupture putting the patient at risk from massive blood loss from the bleeding.
